The progression of the English Language

It is fascinating how words’ meanings change over time.  Here are some examples of what words mean now.  This guide has been produced with the help of numerous bands – read their words, listen to their music, learn new meaning of word.  Job done.

Alternative – Guitar band who play mainstream sixties / indie-influenced pop-rock.  Often with a sub-Foals afro-beat cultural appropriation thing going on.

Edgy – “We use more distortion than The Carpenters.  It might be marginal but it’s a fact.”

Grunge – Guitar band who play mainstream sixties / indie-influenced pop-rock.  Often with a sub-Foals afro-beat cultural appropriation thing going on.

Indie – Guitar band who play mainstream sixties / indie-influenced pop-rock.  Often with a sub-Foals afro-beat cultural appropriation thing going on.  Typically even shitter that the fucking crappy shitty bands who call themselves Alternative or Grunge.

Pop-Punk – Guitar band who want to sound like Green Day if Green Day had spent every second of their existence trying to sell out and had forgotten to write any songs.  This is basically exactly the same thing as saying “Guitar band who want to sound like Green Day if Green Day had forgotten to write any songs.”  That is harsh, Green Day are alright.

Punk – generic mathy/emo-y guitar band who might be better described as Alternative, Grunge or Indie if they were 50% less interesting, 200% less noisy and 50% more talented.  Probably means teh band are alright, but likely nothing special.
